RD Calculator
Saving a fixed amount every month in a recurring deposit? See what it matures to.
What is RD?
A recurring deposit is a fixed monthly deposit with a bank at a fixed rate for a set term. It suits steady savers who want the safety of a deposit without a single lump sum to hand.
How it's calculated
Each monthly deposit earns interest only for the months it is actually on deposit, compounded quarterly at the bank convention. An instalment paid with 30 months left earns ten quarters of interest, one paid in the final month earns a single month. The calculator adds every instalment and its interest to reach the maturity value; interest earned is maturity minus what you paid in.
An example
Save ₹5,000 a month for 5 years at 7% and you pay in ₹3 lakh, maturing to about ₹3.6 lakh before tax.
Questions people ask
RD or SIP?
An RD is safe and fixed; a SIP into equity is riskier but has historically grown faster over long periods. Many people use an RD for near-term safety and a SIP for long-term growth.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, at your income-tax slab, with TDS above a threshold. The figure here is before tax.
